The focus of this class was U.S. History, and for the final culminating project, we had to dissect America’s role in globalism. While it may sound like an easy assignment, it was quite complicated because we had to incorporate American globalism from three different avenues: past, present, and political/social. The symbolic interactionism theory focuses on the role of symbols and social interactions in shaping individual behavior and society as a whole. This theory observes society’s interactions based on how society assigns meaning to objects, behaviors, and events. The symbolic interaction theory is comprised of three principles:  Meaning: people behave in accordance with the meaning/value they have assigned to people or things.  Language: language plays an important role in assigning names to things, and these names give meaning to everything because each thing has its own unique name. To name something, one must possess knowledge about it, and the chosen name often reflects specific features or information related to said thing.  Thought: language is the foundation of thought and allows us to internally dissect meanings, names, and symbols.  Among the five communication mediums, I am most interested in mass communication and intrapersonal communication. Intrapersonal communication is intriguing to me because it is the act of communicating internally with one’s self, which is something that everyone does, all the time, subconsciously and with conscious effort. As the author of our reading stated, intrapersonal communication is important because it is how we maintain our self-concept and influence others’ perceptions of ourselves. I am also interested in mass communication because it’s a way to communicate instantaneously across various platforms, and it’s also a way of establishing a strong media presence and reaching larger audiences.
